Most people spend their lives looking forward, trying to figure out what their future should look like. They chase goals, build plans, and attempt to predict what lies ahead.
But the truth is, clarity about the future rarely comes from looking forward.
It comes from looking backward.
As Steve Jobs once said:
“You can’t connect the dots looking forward. You can only connect them looking backward.”
When you take the time to reflect on your past—the wins, the failures, the risks you took, and the obstacles you overcame—you begin to see patterns. You begin to understand the lessons life has been trying to teach you.
And those lessons are the blueprint for your future.
10X Is Ultimately About Freedom
When people hear the idea of 10X, they often think it means working harder or producing more.
But that’s not the real goal.
10X is about freedom.
The freedom to:
- Live life on your terms
- Build something meaningful
- Create the impact you’re capable of
- Spend your time doing what matters most
But here’s the truth most people don’t want to hear:
You can’t achieve a 10X future with your current model.
If you want a 10X life, you must radically change how you operate.
Your habits.
Your standards.
Your environment.
Your thinking.
In fact, if you’re serious about 10X, you’ll probably need to change 80% of your current life model.
That may sound extreme—but so are extraordinary results.
The Gap vs. The Gain
One of the most powerful concepts I’ve learned comes from Dan Sullivan’s work in The Gap and The Gain.
He writes:
“Your level of capability in the future depends upon the measurement of achievements in the past. You can’t move forward and grow until you’ve acknowledged how far you’ve come and have properly measured your gains.”
Most people live in what Sullivan calls The Gap.
They measure themselves against an ideal that keeps moving further away. They constantly feel behind. They focus on what they haven’t accomplished yet.
But high performers live in The Gain.
They measure themselves against where they started.
They acknowledge progress.
They recognize growth.
And when you start measuring your gains, something powerful happens:
You begin to see just how capable you really are.
The Fitness Function: You Become What You Focus On
In entrepreneurship, coaching, and life, there’s something called a fitness function.
Simply put:
You become what you focus on.
Whatever you measure, track, and pay attention to becomes stronger.
If you constantly focus on your problems, you become an expert in problems.
But if you focus on your progress, your standards, and your lessons learned, you become someone who continually evolves.
And that’s where reflecting on your past becomes so valuable.
When you transform your past experiences into lessons, you gain something incredibly powerful:
Standards.
Your Past Defines Your Standards
Your past tells you what works.
It tells you what doesn’t.
It teaches you what you will tolerate—and what you will never tolerate again.
Over time, those lessons create filters.
These filters become your personal standards.
They help you determine:
- Which opportunities are worth pursuing
- Which people belong in your life
- Which environments allow you to grow
- Which habits support your future
Your standards shape your decisions.
And your decisions shape your life.
Your 10X Future Starts With Your 10X Past
If you want to create a bigger future, start by studying your past.
Ask yourself:
- When was I at my best?
- What risks paid off the most?
- What challenges made me stronger?
- What decisions changed the trajectory of my life?
When you look back honestly, you’ll start to see the dots connect.
You’ll recognize the moments that defined you.
And those moments will reveal something powerful:
You’re capable of far more than you realize.
Your past isn’t just a story.
It’s evidence.
Evidence that you’ve already overcome obstacles.
Evidence that you’ve already grown.
Evidence that you’re capable of building a future far bigger than the one you’ve imagined.
And once you see that clearly…
Your 10X future becomes possible.
Final Thought
If you want a bigger future, don’t start by chasing bigger goals.
Start by acknowledging how far you’ve already come.
Because when you truly understand your past…
You gain the confidence, clarity, and standards required to build a 10X life of freedom.
